„Summer 1910
At the Women’s Conference in Kopenhagen two friends,
Clara Zetkin (Wiederau, Kingdom of Saxony) Rosa
Luxemburg (Zamość, Russian-Poland), propose the
introduction of an international women’s day, an idea
that came from the USA where the national women’s
committee wants to initiate a national day of action for
the women’s suffrage.

1911
The first International Women’s Day takes place.
There are no flowers.

1933-1945
Under the National Socialist Regime the International
Women’s day is officially being banned. Instead Mother’s
day, which is closer to the National Socialist ideas,
becomes an official holiday. Despite the ban the
International Women’s Day continues to exist, not in the
streets but in private homes. Celebrating the 8th of
march becomes a sign of resistance. Secret symbols are
‚airing‘ red objects at the windows or clotheslines and
the red carnation that lasted until today.

08.03.1994
With the so called Women’sStrikeDay experiences a
comeback. Since then on the 8th of march there are
more and more events promoting women’s rights.

2002
Bahrein establishes the female suffrage, over 100 years
after it was first established in Wyoming,USA 1870 and
12 years after the canton Appenzell, Switzerland
introduced it (last of the Europeans) in 1990.

2014
Even 20 years after the Women’sStrikeDay the top
annual salaries of 100 000 – 250 000 Euro are by 91,6%
being earned by men.

The Luxemburgian EU Commissioner Viviane Reding
states : „As long as we have to celebrate a women’s day,
there is no gender equality […] “

Róża!, how did that go again with the matriarchy?“
